Holiday Shopping Stress Already Started? Group Suggests We Take a “Shopping Holiday” this Season

Holiday Shopping Stress Already Started? Group Suggests We Take a “Shopping Holiday” this Season

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) October 10, 2005

The unofficial ticker leading up to Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa has begun counting down the days remaining and most Americans have already received several pounds of shopping catalogs urging them to buy and spend in order to assure themselves of a festive and happy holiday season. Yet with 75 days remaining until the holidays, a group called Shopping Holiday is encouraging people to take a holiday from shopping this season, regardless of their religion, faith or financial circumstances.

“A shopping holiday is something everyone can take,” enthused Shopping Holiday founder, Heidi Wanken. “By saying no to the hustle and bustle, spending madness and chaos, you can say yes to the things that really matter and that we should be celebrating this time of the year – things like families, traditions, service, charity and compassion.”

The group recommends that participants determine a realistic figure that they can afford to allocate towards holiday spending. After accounting for “must-buy” gifts for children, relatives and miscellaneous holiday expenses, they recommend that holiday-goers split the remaining sum between two expenditures: their own financial security and gifts to charitable organizations and groups around the world.

With personal savings at record lows and credit card balances and delinquencies at all-time highs, Shopping Holiday is encouraging individuals and families to reduce debt or increase their savings while also sharing a significant portion of their holiday budget with those in need. There is no formula on how much to save and how much to give and holiday-goers are encouraged to make the decision based on their own circumstances and convictions. While some may choose to give all of their holiday budget to charitable organizations, others facing their own hardships may elect to reduce some high-interest debt in order to secure their own future while also sharing a portion with others in need. Since holiday-goers will not have to shop, wrap and ship all holiday season, they can spend their time helping others, making homemade gifts, gathering with loved ones and savoring the magic of the season.

“Excessive spending on holiday gifts is not connected to any of the religious traditions we celebrate during this time. While gifts are wonderful to give and receive, we have allowed them to become the focus instead of simply another part of the celebration,” Wanken observed. “Far too many of us lose sight of our budgets when the holidays roll around and we spend too much without much consideration for the future. Instead, we can choose to plan for our future while also sharing with others.”

Shopping Holiday launched its website, http://www.shoppingholiday.org, earlier this month for interested individuals to find out more about taking a holiday from shopping, look for alternatives to “shop till you drop,” plan their own shopping holiday, get suggestions on how to share their decision to take a shopping holiday with loved ones and research charities that they may consider supporting in lieu of traditional gifts.

“We are encouraging people to do something different this year and choose not just to spend money, but rather to spend time,” Wanken commented. “Spend time with family, friends and loved ones. Spend time helping others. Spend time making memories and sharing traditions – these will last far longer than another sweater or gadget!”

Electrical Safety Foundation International Launches 2010 Holiday Safety Campaign

Electrical Safety Foundation International Launches 2010 Holiday Safety Campaign

Arlington, VA (Vocus) November 4, 2010

Earlier today, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) announced the launch of its annual holiday safety campaign, encouraging families and communities across the country to Make Safety a Tradition of the holiday season. The winter holiday season is traditionally a festive and eventful time of year. Celebrations, family gatherings and visits from houseguests traditionally increase in number during the season. Unfortunately, statistics show that incidents of home fires and electrical accidents typically increase during the winter holiday season as well.

According to a recent consumer survey conducted by the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), nearly 60 percent of people plan to host guests in their homes during this holiday season.

“Preparing for the arrival of guests in the midst of the hectic holiday season can be challenging,” cautions Brett Brenner, president of the Electrical Safety Foundation International. “While festive decorations and savory food may seem like the most important aspects of holiday entertaining, remember not to overlook the safety of your guests.”

This holiday season, ESFI is teaming up once again with The Home Depot to create a safety awareness campaign with the goal of focusing national attention on the safety concerns specific to holiday activities.

In addition, ESFI, in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, is educating Americans about safety concerns associated with holiday entertaining, focusing specifically on child safety, decorating and decreasing the risk of home fires.

As a part of this holiday safety program, ESFI has prepared a Holiday Safety Community Toolkit that is organized to align with the campaign itself, providing consumers with a collection of new resources to help them become safety-conscious hosts and houseguests this season. In addition, ESFI’s seasonal website features tips, facts, statistics, trends, and safety reminders to help keep families and communities safe this season.

ESFl’s complementary 2010 Holiday Safety Community Toolkit can be downloaded at no cost on the Foundation’s seasonal website, http://www.holidaysafety.org.

“It is critical that families remember to keep safety in mind while enjoying this exciting and extremely busy time of year,” reminds Brenner. “A proactive approach to safety will help you give the gift of safety to your family and friends this holiday season.”

Visit ESFI’s holiday safety website, http://www.holidaysafety.org, throughout the holiday season for all of the safety tips and tools you need to Make Safety a Tradition for your family.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is the premier 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to promoting electrical safety at home and in the workplace. For more information about ESFI and electrical safety, visit http://www.electrical-safety.org.

A Green Solution for Holiday Lighting

A Green Solution for Holiday Lighting

The Capitol Tree

(Vocus) September 6, 2007

HolidayLEDs.com, an ecommerce company which specializes in light emitting diode, or LED, holiday and Christmas lighting is promoting its product as a green and cost-effective solution to holiday lighting.

Incandescent lighting has been the standard in holiday and Christmas lighting since it replaced candles over 100 years ago. However, in the last 3 years LED holiday and Christmas lighting has become increasingly available to consumers through the internet and retail stores.

Although LED technology has been around since the seventies, until recently its use was largely limited to applications in commercial instrument display panels. Recent improvements in LED technology have made LED lighting viable in other applications such as LED Christmas lights.

LED lighting is preferable to standard incandescent lighting for several reasons:

1.    Environmentally Friendly – Because LED lamps use so little energy and are longer lasting they environmentally responsible choice in Christmas or holiday lighting.

2.    Energy Efficiency – LED lamps use approximately 90% less energy than standard incandescent lights.

3.    Safety – LED lamps operate at approximately 1 degree Fahrenheit above room temperature and are safer than incandescent lights which are responsible for over 300 home fires each holiday season.

4.    Longevity – LED lamps will last for 50,000 hours or more compared to about 2,000 for standard incandescent lamps.

5.    Durability – LED lamps are more durable because they do not contain a fragile filament and are covered in hard plastic not glass like incandescent lamps.

Although LED holiday and Christmas lighting is more expensive than standard incandescent string lighting, LED lights will pay for themselves in a few seasons. A household which illuminates an average size Christmas tree with LED lights will save approximately $ 12 per year in electricity compared to incandescent mini lights. The savings jump to over $ 70 per year for those who like to use the larger C9 model lights. The cost savings can be even more significant for those Christmas lighting fanatics out there.

A 2003 report conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that the U.S. consumes about 2,220,000 KWh of electricity each year to illuminate miniature holiday lights. (*2,220,000 KWh is enough electricity to run approximately 200 homes for an entire year.) Based on these figures, the EPA report concluded that a 20% market shift to LED holiday or Christmas lights would reduce annual electricity consumption in the U.S. by 400,000KWh. These figures are especially compelling when one considers that this report only took into consideration miniature holiday lights used for a period of approximately 30 days.

HolidayLEDs’ brand of LED holiday lights are currently used on the national holiday tree in Washington, D.C., the tree at Rockefeller Center in New York City, and several other high-profile displays including over half of the state capital Christmas trees.

HolidayLEDs.com offers LED holiday and Christmas lights suitable for general home use and a professional grade suitable for larger installations. Both types can be purchased online through HolidayLEDs’ website at HolidayLEDS.com.

Nearly a Third of UK Travellers Take Winter Sports Breaks without Holiday Insurance

Nearly a Third of UK Travellers Take Winter Sports Breaks without Holiday Insurance

(PRWeb UK) December 23, 2010

As UK holidaymakers prepare to head for the slopes this winter, new research from the Foreign Office reveals that almost a third (31%) of people in the UK admit to not taking out travel insurance for their winter sports holidays .

Post Office Travel Insurance is urging those hitting the slopes to review their travel insurance cover before departing. Skiers who travel without travel insurance or with inadequate travel insurance for their proposed winter sports activities cover could face some hefty bills if they suffer an accident while on holiday.

Post Office Travel Insurance reminds holidaymakers to check to make sure any travel insurance covers any winter sports activity they might partake in is fully covered.

Many standard travel insurance policies do not cover winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding. However, travel insurance providers such as the Post Office do offer additional ski and winter sports travel insurance cover on top of standard travel insurance cover.

As skiers head off the slopes, Post Office Travel Insurance advises UK holidaymakers to consider their travel insurance policy requirements. For those taking more than one holiday this year if then an annual multi-trip travel insurance policy (including the additional winter sports cover) could prove a cheaper option than several single-trip travel insurance policies.

ABTA Research Finds Many UK Holidaymakers Travel Without Holiday Insurance

ABTA Research Finds Many UK Holidaymakers Travel Without Holiday Insurance

(PRWeb UK) January 11, 2011

According to ABTA’s Consumer Trends research , 19 per cent of UK holidaymakers head aboard without any travel insurance cover, with 17 per cent believing it is ‘not important’ to take out holiday insurance.

Furthermore, some 55 per cent of UK holidaymakers said they do not purchase travel insurance when holidaying in the UK.

Post Office Travel Insurance strongly advises UK travellers to consider their holiday insurance options before heading away, whether on an overseas break or domestically. Travel insurance can of course be vital in providing cover in case travel plans are disrupted through flight or train cancellations.

Post Office Travel Insurance reminds UK travellers that, while the EHIC card will protect against medical costs incurred when travelling within the European Union, it does not provide against repatriation costs The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advises that UK holidaymakers have adequate travel insurance cover in place in case medical treatment is required abroad.

Post Office Travel Insurance reminds any travellers planning on taking their holidays in the UK, that travel insurance is still important. For domestic breaks, Post Office Travel Insurance reminds holidaymakers that travel insurance can cover such potential problems as luggage theft or travel cancellations. A Post Office travel insurance policy will provide cover for UK travellers for domestic travel, as long as the UK break includes 2 nights of pre-booked accommodation.
